HI, I’M JILL
Human connections with the environment - past and present - shape my life as an outdoor enthusiast, archaeologist, and artist. My journey with visual art began long ago, but it wasn’t until becoming a parent in 2019 that I committed to both a medium and a focus. Carrying a small watercolor kit on family adventures allowed me to create while pausing on the skin track or nursing a newborn in the foothills, turning brief moments in nature into a foundation for a lasting creative practice.
Painting outdoors fosters an intimate dialogue with the environment. Some days my brushes capture the physical details of a landscape, other times they follow curiosity beyond aesthetics. Temperature, wind, rain, and even the occasional mosquito influence each work, making every piece a reflection of place and experience.
These small, place-based watercolors often extend beyond personal expression, serving as tools to communicate information, support causes, and amplify environmental messages. I hope each painting can contribute to the bigger picture in its own way.
I grew up in Alaska and live in Fairbanks, on the traditional lands of the Dene people of the lower Tanana River.
